Canadian Natural has fully cleaned up the flow to surface sites. We have enhanced our understanding of operational practices and have applied these learnings in our approach to mitigate the risk of future seepages.

As part of our groundwater monitoring program at the 9-21 location, Canadian Natural detected a trace amount of bitumen emulsion in an observation well during routine sampling on October 20, 2016. This occurrence is not unexpected considering a bitumen bearing fracture was intersected when the well was drilled in 2014. Canadian Natural believes that the bitumen emulsion found in the well is a result of the migration of trapped bitumen emulsion along a fracture. There is no impact to the public or the environment as a result of this event. Canadian Natural will continue to monitor the bitumen occurrence in the well.
