With Fun & Integrity - Employee Initiatives

Community Leadership and Volunteerism

Employees across Canadian Natural take pride in supporting local communities. They show their leadership and generosity by volunteering their time and skills, and contributing to the areas where they live and work. Canadian Natural‘s management takes pride in supporting their efforts.

Here are just a few of the programs that made a difference in 2020:

30+ Years Supporting the United Way

With the help of hundreds of volunteers organizing and participating in campaign events, our 2020 workplace campaigns raised $2.4 million with corporate matching, bringing our year-to-date total for the United Way to over $28 million.

Local Employee-Led Programs

Our field-based employees live in the communities where they work and have a firsthand perspective of the communities’ needs. They connect with our donation programs in a personal way by contributing to and volunteering with several organizations. Their knowledge lies at the heart of our corporate giving.

Every year, our staff coordinates employee donations, fundraisers and volunteer support to a wide range of organizations identified in their communities. These efforts are coordinated through Field Matching and Charitable Donations Committees (CDC). Personal contributions to the Field Matching Program in Canada and the Charitable Donation Committees in our International operations are matched by the Company. In 2020, these programs provided direct support to several organizations, including the Bonnyville Health Foundation, Haying in the 30s Cancer Support Society, Lloydminster Rescue Squad, the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation, as well as the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the UK and the Plateau Dokui school in Abidjan, CDI.

St. Albert staff set a record annual fundraiser for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta.

Assisting Families, Individuals and Seniors

Our teams work with neighbouring communities to understand their priorities and support grassroots efforts. Some of our 2020 initiatives are:

  • From Western Canada to our International operations, employees donate much needed hampers and gifts to families, seniors and food banks every year. For example, through our Adopt-a-Family program, we sponsored 27 families, 29 seniors, and 89 individuals, making some of their Christmas wishes come true. Our Calgary Adopt-a-Family program started more than two decades ago.
  • We collected 967 stuffed animals for our 25th annual campaign supporting the the Rainbow Society Teddy Bear drive. The stuffed animals are donated every year to children and families in need.
  • Canadian Natural is one of the largest donors from the oil and natural gas sector in Alberta and Northwest Territories under the Canadian Blood Services ‘Partners for Life’ program. We have been part of this program since 2005. In 2020, employees donated 787 units of blood, including donors from Calgary, oil sands operations and other field locations. Some of those donors had to drive hours to donate! This admirable effort got us a COVID Heroes Award from CBS.
